Abstract (English)

There is currently virtually no generic, scientific approach to catastrophes. Specific types of catastrophes have been defined, and some classifications have been proposed. These, however, leave many questions unanswered. This paper pursues questions on the relevance of the human factor, the interrelation of inner structures and outer influences, the time dimension, and on feedbacks. It views catastrophes more as radical changes of systems structures than as extreme events. This yields practical procedures for catastrophe prevention.
